Important Comprehensive Exam Information

Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing & Elementary Education

Purpose and Format

The comprehensive exam is a culminating portfolio that presents a coherent picture for how the teacher candidate has developed knowledge and skill as a Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  The artifacts in the portfolio should demonstrate that the teacher candidate has met all InTASC Standards  and CED Standards.  The portfolio should include deep reflection on the Deaf Education clinical experience.

Required for

Students earning a MAT in Elementary Education/Deaf Education.

A panel of 2 TCNJ faculty members

Timeline and Submission

The portfolio is to be compiled over the course of the semester in which the teacher candidate completes the Deaf Education Clinical Experience.  The portfolio is an electronic resource and will be submitted digitally.

The following artifacts from your clinical experience must be included in your portfolio:

A district, school, and classroom profile

  1. An annotated list of materials and curricula that are used in the classroom
  2. All lesson and unit plans
  3. A reflective journal

Procedures

During the semester in which the teacher candidate is enrolled in DFHH 690 Clinical Experience/Deaf Education, the teacher candidate will also enroll in DFHH 700 The Comprehensive Exam.

  1. The Comprehensive Exam is a pass/fail exam with 2 faculty members evaluating the candidate’s portfolio. A third faculty member will evaluate the portfolio in the event that the two evaluators disagree on the rating.
  2. In the beginning of the semester, the faculty advisor will hold an information session about the comprehensive exam. Additionally, an optional mid-semester meeting will be held to answer questions about the final portfolio.
  3. The portfolio is due during the last week of the semester (on a date decided by the faculty and shared at the information session held at the beginning of the semester). The portfolio will be uploaded and shared with all faculty through google drive.
  4. The faculty panel will review the comprehensive exam and determine if the candidate has passed or failed the exam.
  5. Candidates will be notified of their status via the posting of grades in PAWS. Feedback will be provided to any candidate that fails the comprehensive exam.
