Student Organizations

Deaf-Hearing Connection

The Deaf-Hearing Connection (DHC) is a student-run organization funded by the Student Finance Board (SFB), that is open to all undergraduate-level students at The College of New Jersey. Although the majority of members are majors in the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program within the Special Education, Language and Literacy Department and minors in Deaf Studies, it also attracts other students who are interested in the mission of the club, which is to acquire a greater appreciation for Deaf culture through first-hand experiences. The mission also focuses on outreach to the Deaf community through an array of service opportunities.

FUSE (Friendship and Unity for Special Education)

FUSE is comprised of TCNJ students who share the vision of creating an inclusive community on the TCNJ campus. The group provides social events for adults with intellectual disabilities and inclusive playgroups for children. FUSE offers professional development for our members, sharing information regarding the current world of education.

Friendship Days

Friendship Days are social events to encourage appropriate socialization among peers with and without disabilities (ages 16 and up). Students who are part of our organization help plan the events and interact with our guests on the big day. Each social event has a specific theme with decorations, games, music (one of our guests acts as our resident DJ), crafts, and many other activities. Friendship Days usually take place on Friday evenings between 5PM – 9PM and are held around three times a semester.

Inclusive Playgroups

Inclusive playgroups are social events similar to Friendship Days in that they provide an opportunity for appropriate socialization among peers with and without disabilities. However, they are geared toward children between the ages of 4 and 8. These themed playgroups include arts and crafts, reading stories, games, and fun activities. Students who are part of our organization help plan the events and interact with our guests. Inclusive Playgroups usually take place on Sunday afternoons from 12PM – 4PM and are held around three times a semester.
