Internal Transfer to Early Childhood Special Education

The Undergraduate Coordinators evaluate requests from students who wish to transfer into the Early Childhood Special Education program from another department or another program.

Applicants must make an appointment to see Dr. Eberly, co-coordinator of the undergraduate Early Childhood Special Education program, for an interview. During this interview, the five-year program is explained and questions are answered. If the program seems a good fit, the change of major request will be granted and the paperwork completed. Requirements for admission and retention include the following:

  1. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to enter the program and must maintain the 2.75 GPA throughout the undergraduate portion of the program. A GPA of 3.0 is required to enter the graduate/5th year of the program. Please note that for the three semesters with an overload (5 courses), students must have a 3.3 GPA (students with a lower GPA will not be allowed to overload and will need to take winter or summer courses to remain on track).
  2. Students may take SPE 103, ECE102, and SLP, 102 (i.e. the lower level early childhood special education courses) prior to becoming an Early Childhood Special Education major. No upper-level special education courses can be taken without admission to the program as an Early Childhood Special Education Major.
  3. Students must have satisfactorily completed (or been waived from) SPE 103 and any one of the following courses: ECE 102, MAT 105 or BIO 104, before they can be formally admitted to the Early Childhood Special Education program. Students may be provisionally accepted to the Early Childhood Special Education program until this coursework is completed.
